Nyayo Rising Stars continues to use sport as a platform for youth empowerment, character building and positive transformation within Nyayo Estate and surrounding communities.

Nyayo Rising Stars Football Club demonstrated its commitment to environmental conservation and community development on 26 September 2026 by taking part in an estate clean-up and tree-planting drive in Nyayo Estate. Club officials, coaches and players from the Under-9 to Under-15 age categories planted more than 30 trees and collected waste along the route from Malaika Park to Fedha Road, near Nyayo Estate Gate B.

Led by club officials Opiata Otieno and Willick Otieno, the morning exercise reflected Nyayo Rising Stars’ greening agenda and its belief that football development should extend beyond the pitch. The club views young players not only as future footballers but also as responsible members of society who can contribute positively to their communities.

The activity began at Malaika Park, where the players, coaching staff and officials worked together to collect litter. The team separated organic waste from plastics, promoting responsible waste management and supporting efforts to keep the estate clean. The collected garbage was removed in support of the Nairobi County Council’s work to eliminate unwanted waste from the area.

The clean-up continued from Malaika Park towards Fedha Road, covering the area just outside Nyayo Estate Gate B. Players worked under the guidance of their coaches and club officials, applying the same discipline, teamwork and commitment expected of them during football training and matches.

The tree-planting exercise added an important environmental dimension to the initiative. More than 30 trees were planted, contributing to the preservation and expansion of green spaces within the estate. Trees help improve air quality, provide shade, support biodiversity and make residential areas more attractive and healthier for families and children.

For Nyayo Rising Stars, the exercise was also an opportunity to promote its rallying call of “building community.” The message encourages club members to take an active role in improving their surroundings, building character, protecting green and open spaces, and creating an environmentally conscious community.

The initiative was organized by the Nyayo Estate Residents Association, commonly known as NERA. The association plays an important role in maintaining the identity and standards of Nyayo Estate by promoting good governance, cleanliness, order and community participation. Its efforts have helped the estate maintain its reputation as a well-organized residential community and a source of pride in the region.

Nyayo Rising Stars’ participation strengthened the club’s positive relationship with NERA. The football club has consistently supported activities organized by the residents’ association, demonstrating its willingness to work with local institutions for the benefit of the wider community. This cooperation reflects shared values and a common commitment to preserving the estate’s environment and improving the quality of life for residents.

The partnership between NERA and Nyayo Rising Stars also illustrates the importance of collaboration in community development. NERA provides leadership and coordination, while the football club brings the energy and participation of young people. By involving players in community activities, the partnership ensures that the next generation is not merely a beneficiary of development efforts but an active participant in creating positive change.

Speaking during the exercise, club official Opiata Otieno said the clean-up and tree-planting drive was central to the club’s foundational pillars. These pillars include personal growth, character building and positive community transformation. The club believes that its responsibility is not limited to developing football skills, but also includes helping young people become disciplined, responsible and socially conscious citizens.

The activity gave players a practical lesson in environmental responsibility. Rather than only learning about conservation in theory, they took part in collecting waste, separating materials and planting trees. Such experiences can encourage young people to keep their homes, schools, training grounds and public spaces clean.

The involvement of players from the U9 to the U15 age groups made the exercise particularly valuable. It brought together children and young adolescents at different stages of their development and gave them a shared sense of purpose outside football. Older players had an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, while younger participants learned the importance of cooperation, service and respect for the environment.

The clean-up also highlighted the wider role of sports clubs in youth development. Football helps young people improve their physical fitness, technical ability and tactical understanding. However, community activities help develop other important qualities, including empathy, accountability, leadership and social awareness.

A clean and green environment further supports the club’s football objectives. Well-maintained spaces provide safer and more attractive areas where children can play, interact and develop their talents. Removing waste reduces health and safety risks, while protecting open spaces ensures that they remain available for recreation and youth activities.

Nyayo Rising Stars’ involvement therefore went beyond the collection of rubbish and planting of trees. It sent a strong message that young footballers can become agents of positive change and that sports organizations have a responsibility to support the communities in which they operate.

As the club continues to work with NERA and other stakeholders, its participation in environmental and community initiatives is expected to remain an important part of its identity. Through such partnerships, Nyayo Rising Stars can help promote environmental awareness, youth empowerment and responsible citizenship.

The events of 26 September showed that building a successful football club involves more than producing talented players or achieving positive results. It also means building character, strengthening community relationships and creating a lasting social impact. By combining football development with environmental responsibility, Nyayo Rising Stars is helping to shape a cleaner, greener and more united Nyayo Estate.
